Annual Survival Skills Activity Badge Weekend
Definition
Bivouac (biv-oo-ak) n. – a temporary camp without tents or other cover. – v. (bivouacked, bivouacking) to camp in a bivouac. (Source The Oxford Dictionary)
A Bivouac shelter is a simple hut, which you can make quickly. (Source Scouting for boys)
The Activity
Bivouac 2012 is an activity weekend that has been specifically developed for Scouts and Explorer Scouts of Birmingham County, who not only wish to achieve the Survival Skills Badge, but develop their skills further. All of the activities below require the applicant to be available for all dates identified on the application form.
Furthermore each applicant will be expected to build and sleep in a Bivouac, no matter what happens with the weather – there is no back up facilities. There are 4 activities taking 4 years to be complete in the following sequence
- Bivouac Training Award
- Bivouac Award - Assessment for Survival Skills Badge
- Bivouac Junior Leader Award
- Bivouac Junior Staff (Building a Bivouac is optional)
Transport is provided to and from the event.

Please try to avoid comments like “John would have enjoyed Bivouac if it didn’t rain”!
Other Information:
Bivouac Gold Award
During both of the weekends of the Bivouac Award and Survival Skills badge Assessment Scouts and Explorer Scouts will need to complete a number of tests. Each series of test will carry a score and Scouts and Explorer Scouts need to gain at least 70% to pass the Bivouac Award. However Scouts attending both specified dates and scoring an exceptionally high mark will be recommended to receive the Bivouac Gold Award.

Bivouac Activity Weekend Kit List
For more information about what clothing and equipment is required for the Activity Weekend please refer to this link. This applies only to Bivouac Training Award and Bivouac Award & Survival Skills Badge Assessment. Additional specific equipment is required for Bivouac Junior Leader Award (details for which are provided at the Bivouac Junior Leader Award briefing).
The Badges
All artwork for 'Bivouac' badges are designed and provided by Tolley Badges Phone: 01384 878550 or e-mail: info@tolleybadges.co.uk. Badges are only awarded to Scouts, Explorer Scouts and Adults who complete the Activity Weekend. The badges have been approved by the County Commissioner to be worn on the uniform for up to 12 months.
