Practical and General First Aid Courses

Birmingham County Scouts, in partnership with the British Red Cross, are hosting a number of First Aid Courses in 2012 that may be of interest to Leaders, Network Members and Explorer Scouts:

British Red Cross Two Day Practical First Aid Courses

Please note that the April course is now fully booked, Places remain for September's course.

A 2 day Practical First Aid Course being held on 14th & 15th April 2012, and 15th & 16th September at Pikes Pool. Cost is £30 excluding food.

This is a 'hands on' course of 16 hours duration. The syllabus covers key life-saving skills and allows you to update your knowledge of a wide range of emergency situations. It also gives you the opportunity to learn more about common medical conditions and outlines the appropriate treatment for adults and children.

The syllabus also includes treatment for blood loss, fractures, head injuries, spinal injuries and the effects of heat and cold, seizures, heart conditions etc. CPR is covered in detail as are treatments for the more common minor camp and expedition injuries.


The course is camp based and is suitable for Adults needing a First Aid course suitable for permits, Silver and Gold DofE candidates and Explorer Scouts who want to achieve First Aid level 5. It is taught in the open in realistic conditions using trained casualty actors to provide the most enhanced experience of real emergencies. The course leads to a 3 year certified qualification.

British Red Cross One day General First Aid Course

A 1 day General First Aid Course is being held on 10th March 2012 at Centenary House, Hatchet Street, Birmingham, Cost is £12 excluding food.

This is a hands on course of 8 hours duration. The syllabus covers key life-saving skills and allows you to update your knowledge of a wide range of emergency situations. It also gives you the opportunity to learn more about common medical conditions and outlines the appropriate treatment for adults and children.

The syllabus also includes treatment for blood loss, fractures, head injuries, spinal injuries and the effects of heat and cold, seizures, heart conditions etc. CPR is covered in detail as are treatments for the more common minor camp and expedition injuries.

The course is indoor based and is suitable for Adults needing a First Aid course to validate an appointment, Bronze DofE candidates and Explorers who want to achieve First Aid level 4. The course leads to a 3 year certified qualification.
