First Response

Ensuring that our members have access to first aid cover at all Scouting events is a key aspect of providing Safe Scouting. Anyone with a role in Scouting that is ‘youth facing’ will be required to hold a Scout First Response qualification (or equivalent). There are two ways to gain a First Response qualification.

Birmingham First Response Courses

Birmingham Scouts provides free first aid training courses that cover all the elements of the Scout First Response qualification and are delivered by professional first aid trainers. These courses are delivered across the city and so there should be one that is running near to you. These are in-person courses and run from 9am – 4pm.

To help us balance the attendance at these courses, if you are renewing your First Response please can you try and book on a course that is nearest to your expiry date or no more than 3 months before.

For availability of spaces on the courses, please visit the booking form below.

Validate External Qualifications

All First aid courses are different and some (e.g. the Emergency First Aid at Work  - EFAW) do not cover all the elements of Scouts First response. To help, we have provided a checklist you can take to your First aid trainer, and ask them to include and sign off these elements.

We strongly recommend that you take the check list to your course and ask the trainer to include the required elements. If however, you have already completed your course, you can still see if the trainer can complete the list, indicating the parts you did and did not cover. You can then send the completed checklist or a copy of the course syllabus, and a copy of your first aid certificate to us at first-aid-training@birminghamscouts.org.uk. Please note, you may have to complete some additional items to fully sign off First Response – we will advise you of this when checking your syllabus and checklist.

Please download the First Response checklist and First Response flowchart using the buttons below to ensure your course meets the requirements and how to validate it.

Please note – by far the best way to complete all the requirements of Scouts First Response is to attend one of our free Birmingham Courses.
